5 out of 5 stars Great tool   August 24, 2010

This is a REALLY great knife. With a little work, you can get it pretty sharp. There is no plastic or loose components in the construction, this knife feels as if it will last forever.

The sheath, on the other hand, is a failure. It broke on the first day because the little strap that snaps over the guard got sliced off when I unsheathed the rattler. The ''rivets'' in the sheath also tore out.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Value   August 14, 2010

This is an outstanding value if you are looking for a large bowie. I have looked over the other reviews and am pleasantly surprised that the knife I received doesn't have the defects others mention, e.g. mismatched handle, poor fit of handle/bolster, nicked cutting edge, blade finish dull (used?), etc. I have had mine for several months and it looks absolutely great. I used some metal polish (Mother's mag polish) on it and now the blade has a brilliant, mirror-like finish as does the brass. It looks like something you would expect to pay well into triple digit dollars for. It looks so good I have it displayed in my den and have received several compliments on it. The downside for me is that the sheath in no way matches the quality of the knife itself, but I find it looks too good to hide in a sheath anyway so...no big deal.

In a word . . . AWESOME!! This knife was razor sharp right out of the box, as my finger can attest to! It is HUGE and has a nice weight to it. The full tang construction leaves other cheap knives in the dust. The blade is surgical steel and the sheath fits it well; however, the sheath could have been thicker or made of ballistic nylon with a hard plastic liner. All in all, if the only complaint (and a minor one at that) about a knife is it's sheath, I think you would take that every time!! Get one for yourself and see what I mean - you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Cake, anyone?   July 16, 2010

I'm the knife guy. Everyone knows it. Need to cut something? Call me. I'm the guy.
So when I got married, no sissy "cake knife" would do. I'm the knife guy! Enter the Timber Rattler. I purchased this knife for 3 reasons.

1. Shock Value. 100% Satisfied.
2. Awesome. 100% Satisfied.
3. .. and I needed something to cut my wedding cake with... what?

The blade itself is mammoth and thick, very thick. You're not going to sharpen this sucker with your mom's kitchen sharper, so get a stone. But thick is good. It's durable. Everything about the knife screams durable. The handle is hard wood, it's more brown than the picture, but mine had a nice finish. It's thick, so my big hands felt comfortable, but it takes a little getting used to. The sheath is quality leather, not to fancy. Thick and sturdy with a strong snap to hold it in. The brass fittings are solid, and do their job. They're not perfectly symmetrical, and at first that disappointed me.

I'll explain, this knife is not your perfect, shiny, glass-case, display piece. It has a certain hardcore authenticity that you'd expect to find strapped to the gun-belt of an old-west fur trader. A sort of "Grandpa Duke's trusty trail-mate" feel that I've never seen in a knife. It's a different kind of beauty. It's rugged and strong. It's not perfectly manufactured, but somehow that makes it more perfect.

I love this knife.

Well, first off, let me say I definitely had a "lol, holy ****?!" moment when I first opened the box. I'm pretty sure if you were to pull this out on your next camping trip, the first words out of people's mouths would be," Are you serious?" If anyone has watched Gladiator, during the opening battle where Maximus decapitated the enemy and his sword became stuck on the tree trunk.... that sword is only slightly bigger than this knife.

Anyways, let's get to the review. Knife came super fast. It is somewhat large, as implied above. The picture posted by Amazon is misleading, because my knife does not look all shiny and glossy and new. In fact, it looks...used? The handle, and I'm quoting," ...classic dark blue accented with brass bolsters..." is not dark blue. It's more like dark brown, with dirty white stains on it. Imagine a dark brown deck, with chalk written on it. Then when it rains, the chalk gets runny and you get weird white stains. The brass is noticeably scratched in multiple places and also with some small nicks and dents, and definitely not smooth and shiny. There are slight gaps between the brass, wood, and metal of the blade, yet nothing rattles or is loose. The blade itself is full tang, and razor, razor sharp. I'm pretty sure someone recently sharpened it.

Overall, the integrity of the knife blade feels solid, despite the cosmetic imperfections elsewhere. I have a strong inclination that this is not a new knife and that's fine with me. I was saved the effort of sharpening it myself, so it's a decent trade-off. For the price I paid, I wasn't planning on mounting this thing or passing it on to my children; i.e. I will put this thing to work. This is probably why I am keeping the knife versus returning it for another one. This will go next to the machete in the garage, or maybe in my suv for the off chance that a grizzly bear will escape from the zoo in downtown Atlanta and I have to dispatch it.

Oh and it came with a leather sheath with a belt loop and a snap on loop to secure the knife. The sheath is unimpressive at best, but has a pleasant diamond design on one side resembling a rattlesnake skin.
